How to Wash & Care for Crochet Baby Clothes (So They Last Years)

A handmade crochet piece can last years — long enough to be passed down as a keepsake — but only with the right care. Here’s exactly how to wash, dry, and store crochet baby clothes so they stay soft and beautiful.

How to wash crochet baby clothes

  1. Hand wash in cold water. Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent (baby detergent works perfectly).
  2. Soak, don’t scrub. Let the garment soak for 10–15 minutes, then gently squeeze the water through it. Never wring, twist, or rub — this distorts the stitches.
  3. Rinse gently. Rinse in clean cold water until the detergent is gone.
  4. Press out water with a towel. Lay the piece on a dry towel, roll it up, and press gently.

Drying: always flat, never hung

This is the step that ruins most crochet. Hanging a wet crochet dress stretches it out of shape permanently — the weight of the water pulls the stitches down. Instead, lay it flat on a dry towel in shade, gently reshape it with your hands, and let it air dry. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade yarn colours.

Machine washing — can you ever?

We recommend against it for baby wear. If you absolutely must, use a mesh laundry bag, gentle cycle, cold water — and never tumble dry. Hand washing takes ten minutes and keeps the piece looking new for years.

Storing crochet clothes

Fold, don’t hang. Store folded pieces in a drawer or box with a muslin cloth. If storing long-term (for a sibling or as a keepsake), wash first, dry completely, and store away from moisture.

Fixing a pulled loop

If a loop gets snagged, don’t cut it! Gently ease the excess yarn back through the neighbouring stitches with a blunt needle, or message us a photo on WhatsApp — small repairs are usually easy.

A note on our yarn

At Crafted by Ann we use soft, baby-safe yarns like milk cotton, chosen for gentleness on newborn skin and easy care. See how they feel in person with our crochet baby dresses and baby booties — each piece comes with care instructions included.
